Defends Human Rights in Vietnam
OTTAWA, June
14, 2017 – James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk—Interlake—Eastman
(Manitoba) today issued the following statement regarding his participation at
the Vietnam Human Rights Advocacy Day and on the legislative progress of
Senator Raynell Andreychuk Bill S-226 (Magnitsky Law):
“It was my
pleasure to attend the Vietnam Human Rights Advocacy Day organized by the
Canadian Youth for Human Rights in Vietnam (CYHRV) on June 12. This day was a
great opportunity to raise awareness about the ongoing gross human right violations
in Vietnam, and to stand in support of expanding Canada’s sanction regime in
order to hold corrupt foreign officials accountable to internationally
recognized human rights standards.”
“I am fully
committed to implementing Bill S-226, the Justice for Victims of Corrupt
Officials Act, along with my Senate colleagues, Senator Andreychuk
and Senator Thanh Hai Ngo, who are active members of the Senate Standing
Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade.”
“Thanks to
the bipartisan support and the ongoing advocacy of the Vietnamese Canadian
community, including the Vietnamese Canadian Federation and other Vietnamese
organizations across Canada, Bill S-226 passed Second Reading in the House
Commons on June 13 and is one step closer to Royal Assent.”
“In the spirit of Canada’s 150th
Anniversary, it is my hope Canada will demonstrate that gross violations of
recognized human rights and systemic corruption will not be tolerated.”

14 juin 2017 – Aujourd’hui, James Bezan, député de Selkirk—Interlake—Eastman
(Manitoba) a fait la déclaration suivante à propos de sa participation au
Vietnam Human Rights Advocacy Day et du cheminement législatif du projet de loi
S-226 (loi de Sergueï Magnitski), présenté par la sénatrice Raynell Andreychuk :
«
Ce fut pour moi un plaisir de participer au Vietnam Human Rights Advocacy Day
organisé par Canadian Youth for Human Rights in Vietnam (CYHRV) le 12 juin. Il
s’agissait d’une excellente occasion de sensibiliser la population aux
violations flagrantes et continues des droits de la personne au Vietnam, et de
prendre la parole pour appuyer l’élargissement du régime de sanctions du
Canada, de manière à ce que les dirigeants étrangers corrompus soient tenus de
respecter les normes internationalement reconnues en matière de droits de la
personne. »

J’appuie sans réserve la mise en œuvre du projet de loi S-226, Loi sur la
justice pour les victimes de dirigeants étrangers corrompus, tout comme
mes collègues du Sénat, la sénatrice Andreychuk et le sénateur Thanh Hai Ngo,
des membres actifs du Comité sénatorial permanent des affaires étrangères et du
commerce international. »

Grâce à l’appui unanime et aux efforts continus de la communauté canadienne
d’origine vietnamienne, notamment de la Fédération vietnamienne du Canada et
d’autres organisations vietnamiennes de partout au Canada, le projet de loi
S-226 a franchi l’étape de la deuxième lecture le 13 juin à la Chambre des
communes. Il se rapproche donc de la sanction royale. »

Dans l’esprit du 150e anniversaire du Canada, j’espère que le Canada
démontrera que la corruption systémique et les violations flagrantes de droits
de la personne reconnus ne sont pas tolérées. »
